Year 10 visit to Bristol University

On Tuesday 4 April a group of 16 able Year 10 mathematicians took a trip to Bristol University. The event was set up by the Further Maths Support Program with the aim of showing students where further study of maths could lead. Our students also had the chance to meet, hear from and question undergraduates and post graduates who were studying a range of degree courses from Dentistry to Psychology all of which included a maths element. It turns out maths really is everywhere!

Our students were given a tour of the campus, encouraged to think creatively about calculations, took part in a maths competition with students from other local schools, were shown a research project using small drones and robots and considered their own research project, and were given a lecture style presentation on mathematics in biology and it’s applications in robotics.

Our Year 10s gained an insight into possible education and career pathways and several who had not been thinking of university were reconsidering their options.
