Dover Rovers as Students Explore History

On Thursday 28 and Friday 29 September 2017, Year 11 Historians visited Dover Castle on a two day residential trip aimed at exploring how the iconic castle has changed over time.

It was a jam-packed trip but Miss Mazelin and the team fit everything in! The remains of Dover castle are fantastic and allowed the students to see how the site originated from a small lighthouse, through to the medieval castle developed by Henry II, onto the addition of garrison tunnels in the Napoleonic era that were then used as the hub for planning and executing Operation Dynamo (the Dunkirk evacuation).

Students explored the Keep, the command posts, the wartime tunnels and saw where the regional seat of government would be in the event of an attack in the 1960’s. A visit to the nearby Battle of Britain memorial allowed students to reflect on the efforts made by individuals in the past so that they can enjoy freedom today.
