Gloucester Magistrates Court Mock trial Competition

Genevieve Thorpe  (8P) reports:  Over the past few weeks, some Year 8 and 9 students have been preparing for the Magistrates’ Mock Court Trial, where we took on a case and had to prepare and perform a trial.  We took on roles of lawyers, witnesses and magistrates, as well as court staff. We had to prepare the prosecution case to compete with another school’s defence and a defence case to compete against another school’s prosecution. Those involved were: Nicole Black, Keanen Burke, Oliver Curtis, Cora Danieli, Genna Dell, Ben Etheridge, Lydia Geronikolos, Katie Hughes, Ela Kanani, James McGlone-Fry, Sophie Richards, Dan York, Ashley West, and me, Genevieve Thorpe.  Overall, there were about 15 hours of preparation we had to do for this, and possibly more for speech writing, as well as additional statements and questioning to plan and remember. As well as this, there was also a court artist (Ela Kanani) and a court reporter (Keanen Burke), who were part of an extra competition.

On Saturday 9March 2013, we visited Gloucester Magistrates’ Court to compete against Stroud High and Katharine Lady Berkeley School. After our two rounds, we found out the results. We came second with Stroud High, but were only a few points away from winning. We all enjoyed the experience of being in a court room, and found it great fun. We would like to thank the librarians, Mrs Styles and Mrs Sykes, as well as Mr Winward, for helping with this great experience.
