Year 11 Revision Texts for English

The English Faculty would like to thank the students for their hard work and resilience shown in the recent PPEs.

In order to develop the levels of knowledge and understanding needed for the closed book examinations in 2017, Year 11 students need to now start increasing their revision of both English Language and Literature.

We would suggest revising through the following options:

  • Re-read “An Inspector Calls” by J B Priestley
  • Watch any production of “An Inspector Calls” (these are available on YouTube)
  • Re-read “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare
  • Watch any production of “Macbeth” (YouTube – there is also a recent cinematic film release starring Michael Fassbender)
  • Re-read “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens
  • Watch any production of “A Christmas Carol” (especially the 1951 “Scrooge” with Alastair Sim)
  • Use the Internet to find revision guides and tasks on any of the texts studied (again, YouTube has a wealth of video clips)
  • Use the English Faculty YouTube channel (BradonEnglish) which has many revision clips to view.
  • Pick out key quotes from each text – and try to learn these (many of these key quotes are displayed on the English corridor and are in English classrooms – take a photo!)
  • Use your revision cards as quick reminders for these texts: characters, setting, plot points etc.
  • Check (and practise) spelling of key words (especially names of texts and writers)
  • Research revision guides/tasks based on poems in the Anthology (use the Internet for this) and use your own yellow covered revision guide provided by English Faculty
  • Complete English Language revision tasks as homework, as directed by your teacher, using the A5 booklet supplied
  • Read articles on a range of topics (use newspaper or magazine articles) – and consider the use of language for effect
  • Check for exemplar material and practice papers on the AQA website (for Language) and the Edexcel website (Literature).

In addition to this, all Year 11 students will have to create and deliver a Speaking and Listening presentation on a topic of their choice in January.

The English Faculty will be offering Year 11 parents/carers the opportunity to attend an Information Evening on Wednesday 22 February 2017 between 6.00pm and 7.00pm, called "Parent Power - How to Help Your Child Succeed in the English Examinations." This evening will aim to provide parents/carers with specific details of how to answer the GCSE papers, so that you feel better equipped to support your child with revision. Again, more details will follow once preparations have been finalised.
